Annual stakeholder meeting:
towards scalable, actionable biomarker use in CKD
In its third year the PRIME‑CKD consortium is making significant progress in translating biomarker research into clinical and regulatory practice for chronic kidney disease (CKD). On May 18th the consortium met with a group of stakeholders to present the progress, discuss hurdles and further steps.
Recent studies have validated urinary biomarkers such as clusterin and urinary epidermal growth factor (uEGF), across multiple clinical trials. Biomarkers are now being evaluated in prospective trials like the CKD BioMatch trial, which compares personalised, biomarker‑guided care with standard of care treatment.
Beyond clinical evidence, PRIME‑CKD actively engages with European regulators to explore the use of biomarkers as surrogate endpoints and addresses real‑world implementation challenges through studies in Denmark, Sweden and Italy. These initiatives focus on workflow integration, decision‑support, and regulatory readiness.
By combining robust science, regulatory dialogue and implementation research, PRIME‑CKD is laying the groundwork for actionable, scalable and patient‑centred biomarker use in CKD care.
Looking ahead: towards scalable, actionable biomarker use in CKD
Discussions during the stakeholder meeting also drew lessons from oncology and Alzheimer’s research, where validated biomarkers still struggle to achieve routine clinical use. A recurring challenge is translating complex biomarker outputs into clear clinical actions.
PRIME‑CKD addresses this risk proactively by combining quantitative workflow data, feedback from clinicians and regulatory insight. The goal is not only to prove that biomarkers work, but to ensure that they are usable, interpretable and actionable within everyday clinical practice.
A face‑to‑face consortium meeting in Amsterdam is planned for the spring of 2027, where updated results and implementation lessons will be shared with stakeholders.
